Julius Reichel and Roel van der Linden

Live Show – 2024

The wooden terrace in front of the Benedikt Rejt Gallery is in need of a general overhaul. Before it is replaced, we thus have an opportunity to cover it with a large-format action painting. The piece is by Julius Reichel and Roel van der Linden, who typically work with a spontaneous and unfettered form of expression. It thus is no sur- prise that few of Reichel’s “normal” paintings are smaller than two meters in height. Working with manic energy, he covers his canvases in paint, writing, and idiotically laughing figures and smiley-faces in a style that he called “lobotomized figuration.” Roel van der Linden is a Dutch painter currently living in the Czech Republic who works with a broad range of artistic approaches, from detailed self-portraits all the way to abstract forms covering the gallery from floor to ceiling. The two artists met while working on a large-format canvas for the Luxfer Gallery in Česká Skalice as part of the PARTICIP 23 project. This loose continuation represents another collaboration between the two artists and the gallery.
