I often paint self‑portraits on square formats. I like the fact that a square is very standard and not very suitable for a portrait; it forces me to focus more on the painting than on the portrait.
I usually paint them bigger than the actual size of a head. In this way, the painting takes control over its subject.
I want to keep the subject of the portrait of the painter as a starting point, because without the painter there is no painting. Hence, the painter is subject of the painting — and because he/she paints, painting is subject of the painting as well.
